A designated beneficiary is the person(s) or organization you identify to receive survivor
benefits for your service after December 31, 1986, in case you have no eligible spouse
or your spouse waives the benefit and you die before your pension begins. In this
section, you may name your children, other relatives, friends or organizations. If you
have eligible children, they must be listed as eligible children, and selected as
designated beneficiaries. Any benefits payable will be divided equally among all the
named beneficiaries. If you are survived by an eligible spouse, the designated
beneficiary is not entitled to any benefits.
If your designated beneficiary is a minor child, and you have
appointed a trustee to administer these benefits under a trust
agreement, please provide OPTrust with a copy of the trust
agreement. If there is a Guardian of Property appointed for the
minor child simply name the minor child. In accordance with
provincial law, if there is no Guardian of Property appointed by
Court Order and there is no trustee named in a trust agreement,
survivor benefits may be paid into Court. Please obtain independent
legal advice if you are considering the appointment of a trustee or
establishing a Guardian of Property. If you want more information
on the special payment rules that apply for minor children, please
read the OPTrust fact sheet Survivor Benefits and Minor Children.
