Disability pension
To qualify for a disability benefit under the OPSEU Pension Plan, you
must be totally and permanently, physically or mentally disabled. In order
to receive the disability pension you must apply to OPTrust, satisfy the
above criteria, and you must resign from your employment. Depending on
your total credit or membership in the Plan, including your period of
employment with your new employer, you may be eligible for either a disability
pension or a special disability refund.
If you have less than 10 years of credit and membership, including
the period of employment with your new employer, you do not qualify for
a disability pension. You may receive a special disability refund under
the Plan, plus interest.
If you have more than 10 years of credit or continuous membership, including
the period of employment with your new employer, your disability pension
is calculated using the basic pension formula.
You should contact OPTrust and your current pension plan before making
decisions about a disability pension. Rules about qualifying for a pension
and any adjustments or offsets that may apply can vary significantly from
plan to plan.
