WHAT ABOUT SURVIVOR BENEFITS?

The OPSEU Pension Plan provides important benefits for your survivors after you die. Eligibility for survivor benefits is based on your marital status both at the time your OPSEU Pension Plan membership ends and when your pension payments commence. If you die while you have an eligible spouse, your spouse will automatically receive survivor benefits from the OPSEU Pension Plan. If you do not have an eligible spouse, survivor benefits are payable to your eligible children (if any) and/or your designated beneficiary, or your estate.

If you are divested, to meet the Plan’s eligibility criteria, your spouse must be your spouse both at the time of your divestment from OPSEU Pension Plan, and at the time that your pension commences.

If you acquire a spouse after divestment, pension law requires you to provide a survivor pension to that spouse on retirement – unless he or she waives the right to survivor benefits. In this situation, your spouse’s future survivor pension will be paid for by reducing the pension paid to you from the OPSEU Pension Plan during your lifetime. If you are in this situation, contact OPTrust for a calculation of reductions and information about waivers.

For detailed information on survivor benefits and your OPTrust pension, please refer to the OPTrust booklet Your Pension and Your Beneficiaries and the Identifying Benefit Recipients form, or contact OPTrust.
